Queenstown Mountain Bike Club was formed to help grow mountain biking in the region and work with the wider community to build and care for local trails. Today, the club continues to work closely with the Department of Conservation, Queenstown Lakes District Council, and landowners to develop new trails and maintain the existing network.

 

QMTBC helps develop and maintain a wide variety of local mountain bike trails, all of which are free for the public to ride. Please respect any trail closures you come across so we can help protect the trails and keep everyone safe.

Queenstown is a world class riding destination, but with so many incredible trails it can be hard to know where to start. Below you will find our top recommendations for the different trail areas across Queenstown. Before you head out, be sure to check the ability guide for each area so you can choose trails that suit your riding level and make the most of the terrain. That way, you will finish your day stoked for more.

Ben Lomond Trails (BLT)

Queenstown's premier-world-class trail network, right above town.

Originally built in the late 90s by a passionate group of local volunteers, the Ben Lomond Trails have grown into one of Queenstown’s most iconic riding areas.

 

You can access BLT by:

  • Pedalling up Skyline Access Road

  • Taking the Skyline Gondola with a bike uplift pass

What to Expect

BLT is known for steep, technical terrain. While there are some Grade 3 and 4 trails, most of the network is best suited to advanced riders due to the natural terrain and trail style.

 

Start Here (Recommended Runs)

Warm-up lap: Lazy Vertigo > Single Track Sandwich > Thunder Goat

A great introduction to the network with a mix of flow and light tech.

 

Step it up: I’m A Shreddin’ or Armageddon > Thingymajig > Original

A classic BLT combo — blending technical riding with fast, flowing sections.

 

Full spice (experts only): World Cup > Hobbit > Killer Bee

All Grade 6. Steep, technical, and unforgiving with limited easier options.

 

Pedal for More – If you’re pedalling and want more value for the climb: Squid Run (Grade 4)
A community-built favourite with a mix of flow, roots, and technical sections. Less steep than many BLT trails, so you get more trail for your effort.

 

Go higher to access the Fernhill Trail Network

Feeling strong or riding an ebike? Head along Beeched-As, an undulating traverse leading to the Fernhill side of the network. At the top you’ll find: The famous McGazza Bench — one of the best viewpoints in Queenstown

 

From here you can: Drop into BluGazi (Grade 4) — fun, flowy, and fast

Or take on Salmon Run (Grade 6) — steep and technical

 

Jump + Flow Line:

McNearly Gnarly (Grade 4)

One of the most iconic jump tracks in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • Progression-friendly table tops

  • Suitable for intermediate through to advanced riders

  • Always worth a roll-through before sending

Access: Around 15 minutes pedal from Wynyard Crescent Carpark.

Wynyard Jump Park

Wynyard is the heart of Queenstown’s freestyle scene — home to Mini Dream, Dream Track, and a range of progression features for riders of all levels.

 

Access by:

  • Pedal from town via the Town Link track (watch for walkers)

  • Or park at Wynyard Crescent Carpark

Dream Track

You can spot Dream Track from halfway down McNearly Gnarly, or by walking along the fire road from the McNearly Climb. This is a Grade 6+ Pro/Expert Line, designed for highly skilled riders only.

Widely regarded as some of the best built and largest publicly accessible jumps in the world, Dream Track is a true showcase of what’s possible in modern trail design.

Even if you’re not riding it, it’s well worth checking out — the scale and craftsmanship are next level, and you never know which pro riders you might see throwing down.

 

Mini Dream

Mini Dream is Dream Track’s little brother — built for progression.

  • Multiple lines to suit different skill levels

  • Step up to bigger features as your confidence grows

  • Practice and refine tricks on the mulch jump​​

It’s the perfect place to build skills before taking things to the next level.

 

Airbags & Mulch Jumps

Wynyard also features dedicated progression tools, including airbags and mulch jumps.

  • Airbags are used during club sessions and events, offering a safe way to try new tricks and build confidence

  • Mulch jumps provide a softer landing zone for practising technique and dialling in jumps

 

These features play a key role in helping riders progress — from first jumps through to bigger lines like Mini Dream and Dream Track. Keep an eye on our channels for upcoming airbag sessions and coaching events.

Coronet Peak Trails

No MTB trip to Queenstown is complete without a ride up Coronet Peak. With big vertical, fast flow trails, and epic alpine views, it’s one of the must-ride areas in the basin.

 

Access is by:

  • Drive to the Coronet Peak Base Building and purchase a lift pass for the day

  • Book a shuttle for the day

  • Pedal up via the Dan O’Connell Track

Top to Bottom Runs

For the ultimate top-to-bottom experience:

Dirt Serpent > Rude Rock

  • Cross the road to Morning Glory

  • Finish with Hot Rod back to the base

This combo delivers a long, flowing descent with a mix of Grade 3–4 trails — fast, smooth riding with a few technical sections along the way.

 

Looking for More?

If you’re after something steeper and more challenging:

 

Coronet DH (Grade 5)

A fast, steep, and technical descent that drops back to the base building. From there, it’s a short pedal to reconnect with Rude Rock and continue your ride.

This track is a key training ground for pro riders, with many using it to dial in equipment, test setups, and smash out race runs throughout the summer. If you’re lucky, you might find yourself sharing the hill with some of the world’s best — Coronet is one of the easiest places in Queenstown to spot your favourite riders in action.

  • Long descents with consistent gradient

  • Alpine terrain and open views

SEVEN MILE TRAIL NETWORK

Drive a little beyond Fernhill along the Glenorchy highway and you will discover Seven Mile

Riding Area. The first thing to note, that the best place to park is at Wilson’s Bay rather than

the Seven Mile reserve.

 

The pedal in is easier and quicker, plus you’ll be right on the beach for a lake dip after!! On a 

sunny afternoon this is a very popular spot due to its family friendly trails, and the best

backdrop for a BBQ you can ask for.

 

For those just starting out check out Cool Runnings, a wide, flowy Grade 2 trail that will boost

your confidence and get you ready to explore more. Looking to improve your jump skills?

Then pedal up to Kachoong and follow it into Jack BNimble. Tucked away on the climb up you will come across Bucklands, a beautifully designed North Shore skill area, which is a great place to practise your balance and drop skills. Then on the pedal out you can find some more flowy tech fun down Grin and Holler II or test your drop skills on IB55.

CORONET PEAK LOOP TRACK

If you are an intermediate+ rider and looking for a full day of pedaling around some amazing

views, then you’ll want to check out the Coronet Loop Track.

 

The full circuit is 50km which can take 4-8 hrs depending on fitness levels and if you have an

e-bike. The trail is classified as a Grade 3 trail but there is a section called Pack Sack and

Track which is Grade 4 with some steep drop offs that can feel intimidating. Fortunately you

can bypass this by taking Pack Track Coronet Lopp Link, or follow the Skippers Road before

joining the climb to the Greengate Saddle. You can also cut the length of the trail if you have

two cars by dropping one off in Arrowtown if you want to cut out some of the pedal or a bit

short on time.

 

Make sure you are fully prepared for this trail and consider it a backcountry mission, as there are large sections of the trail that do not have mobile phone coverage. You can find out more info on the Queenstown Trails website.

KERRY DRIVE PUMP TRACK

The Kerry Drive Pump Track opened at the end of 2021. It is located up the top of Kerry Drive on Queenstown Hill and has a big parking space and toilets for public use all year round. With a beautiful view out over the lake, it is a great place to spend a chilled our or two working on some skills or a fun afternoon with the kids.

Riding when the track is wet damages it really quickly so please give this track a day or two to dry out after heavy rain.
